چکیده

Handoff performance of NEMO BS protocol with existent improvement proposals is still not sufficient for real time and QoS-sensitive applications and further optimizations are needed. When dealing with single homed NEMO, handoff latency and packet loss become irreducible all optimizations included, so that it is impossible to meet requirements of the above applications. Then, How to combine the different Fast handoff approaches remains an open research issue and needs more investigation. In this paper, we propose a new Infrastructure independent handoff approach combining multihoming and intelligent Make-Before-Break Handoff. Based on required Handoff time estimation, L2 and L3 handoffs are initiated using effective and timely MIH triggers, reducing so the anticipation time and increasing the probability of prediction. We extend MIH services to provide tunnel establishment and switching before link break. Thus, the handoff is performed in background with no latency and no packet loss while pingpong scenario is almost avoided. In addition, our proposal saves cost and power consumption by optimizing the time of simultaneous use of multiple interfaces. We provide also NS2 simulation experiments identifying suitable parameter values used for estimation and validating the proposed model.

IEEE 802.21 Buffer Predicting Seamless Handoff (BPSH) Scheme for WAVE-WiMAX Heterogenous Handoff

Since Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment (WAVE) is a draft amendment to the IEEE 802.11 standard, the integration of WAVE (IEEE 802.11p) and Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (IEEE 802.16) becomes a concerned issue to mobile network users. During the roaming between the two heterogeneous wireless networks, the quality of multimedia services for users depends heavily on seamless handover,...

Vertical Handoff Reduction Mechanism Using IEEE 802.21 Standard in Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) Network

Low handoff latency and minimum packet loss are envisioned important factors for the next generation Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) based heterogeneous networks. To meet these constraints IEEE 802.21-Media Independent Handover (MIH) was introduced to enhance the Quality of Service (QoS) of the networks. The MIH provides link layer information to the network layer to reduce handoff latency while the mobile...

A survey on applications of IEEE 802.21 Media Independent Handover framework in next generation wireless networks

Integration of various wireless access technologies is one of the major concerns in recent wireless systems in which multi-technology mobile devices are provided to users to roam between different access networks. Being an essential part in heterogeneous wireless systems, vertical handover is more complex than conventional horizontal handover. As IEEE 802.21 Media Independent Handover (MIH) is ...

The 20th Annual IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC'09)

In next generation wireless systems, achieving seamless service continuity when transitioning between heterogeneous networks is a challenging task. An approach to optimize these handover procedures through the introduction of a standardized framework is followed by the IEEE 802.21 working group. The Media Independent Handover (MIH) function of IEEE 802.21 is mainly designed for "client-network"...
